What a long, long day it had been. Class was dull as ever, and the professors were hounding them all for a bunch of homework. It was evening, and finally, Marc had the chance to just, be. Lounging in the common room, he sipped on some pumpkin juice he had filched earlier from the kitchens, and both watched the activity go on around him, and ignored it at the same time. Hanging with his legs over the arm of the armchair in front of the fireplace.
He glanced over his shoulder and looked around, wondering if his best mate, Connor was back from wherever it was he had taken off to. It was boring in the commons when he had to just chill out by himself. He turned back to facing the fire, and took another sip of his pumpkin juice, and sighed. What a dull day it had been.

I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut;
The chatter was louder than it usually was in the evenings. It was the weekend, and many of the students were just so excited to have the next two days off to do whatever it was they felt like. That was why Rin had left the sanctuary of her dormitory tower. The girls in her room were chatting away at what they planned on doing over the weekend, leaving Rin no peace to read.
She stood just on the edge of the room, not out of the doorway leading to the dorms, and not in the common room completely. She looked around, hoping to find at least a quiet place to sit and read her book, when she spotted Marc over by the fireplace. A small smile lit up her face. Marc had always been nice to her, ever since she had been a first year, and after a rough holiday at home, he had comforted her and she had confessed to him her situation at home.
To Rin's surprise, he had reacted very upset, and ever since then, he had taken it upon himself to watch over her. She exited the shadows and weaved in and out of people, making her way over to him. "Hello Marc," she replied softly when she reached him. She sat down on the floor in front of his chair, and without saying another word, she opened her book and began to read once more. They had a relationship that didn't require many words. When she was feeling blue, Rin would go to him, and his silent presence would comfort her.
My weakness is that I care too much...

Marc looked up at the sound of her voice, and although it wasn't Connor, it was at least someone, and he always liked spending time with the quiet Rin. "Hey Rin," he answered back as she sat down before him. He placed a hand on her head and squeezed it gently a time or two, then left it resting on top her head. She was an odd one, but to him, her story made his life seem like fairy tales and rainbows and happy endings.
He looked down at the younger girl who had gone through so much more than he probably ever would. "Whatcha reading?" he asked with a squeeze of his hand on her head, then taking a sip of his pumpkin juice. Normally they could just spend time together in quiet companionship, but he was feeling nosy today. Besides, they'd known each other for almost three years, but he didn't really know her.

I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut;
Rin sat and read her book, content to just be near Marc for the moment. His warm hand resting on her head felt nice, solid and welcoming. She tilted her head back when he asked a question, looking up at him. "Hogwarts, A History," she replied with a small smile, a little embarrassed that she wasn't reading anything cooler like a magazine or one of the latest novels. But the truth was, when you got down to it, Hogwarts, A History was actually a pretty good read.
Giving him another small smile, she tilted her head back down and continued where she had left off. It was odd that Marc seemed interested in what she was doing, but sometimes he got like that. She'd answer his questions as quickly as possible, then things would go back to normal, just the two of them being there together. The warm fire felt good on her face, and after awhile, the voices of everyone else in the commons seemed to fade from Rin's mind.
My weakness is that I care too much...

He sighed at her silence. She never wanted to talk. But what about him? He'd spent the last two years with her coming and going in his life, but they never really connected ever. He glanced over her shoulder to see that she was indeed reading Hogwarts, A History and wasn't just being a smartass.
"How were your summer holidays Rin?" Marc asked, trying to find something to talk about. Although he loved just sitting with Rin, because she didn't expect anything of him than what he was willing to give, she wasn't great on conversation, and he was going to fix that. After he asked that question though, he realized it probably wasn't a smart one. She went home for summer holidays, and home was where her father was.

I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut;
Rin glanced back over her shoulder at Marc again. How were her summer holidays? Well. She spent most of the time with her mother. Trying to keep out of the way of her father. She hadn't succeeded often, but it had been long enough ago that many of the bruises she had acquired from him had disappeared and she could dress freely now.
"It was about how well as it could have been," she answered with a non-committal way. He knew about her situation, but not many others in the castle knew, and she'd rather keep it that way. "How about you? Did you make it to the slopes or the beach at all?" she asked. From the small conversations that they had had, she had realized he spent most of his time outside doing activities like surfing or snowboarding. My weakness is that I care too much...
